I Love Red Rocks Audience Tapes!!!
Does anyone else notice how good Red Rocks audience tapes are far superior to Sbds? I think it's due to the fact that the natural features form such a perfect accoustic environment. To me the rocks seem to fill out the sound without losing any of the fidelity. Jerry's sound is much brighter, and Phils's sound is much fuller, and the rest of the band just sounds more upfront, and Sbds just cannot capture that sound. To hear for yourself, just listen to the Sept '83 shows. The soundboard from the first show sounds weak compared with the other nights, I guess thats why most Rock shows aren't available in SBD. This is the only venue I have heard that actually affects the sound of the band, and makes it more prevalent and better. I think this is why the boys seemed to play a higher percentage of great shows there, the boys could just hear the sound and feel the natural energy that eminated from the rocks as they bounced the sound throughout the venue. Red Rocks is the only place I have been that does not have one seat that has inferior sound quality.

Red Rocks certainly has it's own sound, very different from hockey arenas. One factor to consider is that SBD's from post-78 were done straight off the PA feed before the room EQ. The SBD's from 73 through 78 were, for the most part, done as a seperate mix by Kidd or Betty, and sound much better. (There is an interview with David Lemieux at jambands.com where he covers this). Most Red Rocks shows came during the time when SBD's were the PA mix. Listen to 7.8.78 to get an idea of a Betty mix. Also, if it is windy at Red Rocks your audience tape can suffer too.

PS- Saw Phil up there on Saturday 7.16, an amazing show!
